Improvisation is an essential tool for actors, as it allows them to react spontaneously and authentically in any situation. This class helps actors break out of their comfort zones and explore new ways of creating characters and scenarios. ACTING FOR THE CAMERA: It's Nothing Like Acting On Stage.

Starts 4/24/25  Runs for 7 weeks

7-9:30PM

$300

In an acting for camera class, students explore the techniques and approaches necessary for compelling performances specifically tailored for film and television. This class emphasizes the unique demands of on-screen acting, where subtlety, nuance, and a strong on-camera presence are crucial.

Students learn to convey emotion and character through refined body language, facial expressions, and vocal delivery, understanding how these elements are magnified on screen. Key topics include the impact of camera angles, shot compositions, and lighting on their performance.

An important aspect of the class is preparing students for auditions. The course covers strategies for auditioning in front of a camera, including how to present oneself effectively, interpret script sides, and deliver a strong, memorable performance. Students practice self-taping techniques and receive feedback on how to improve their audition materials.

Understanding how to work collaboratively with directors and fellow actors is emphasized, as well as how to build chemistry with co-stars and fit into a production team.

By analyzing their performances and learning how various production elements impact their work, actors become better prepared for both the on-camera performance and the audition process.

Join Antoine McKay (Empire, South Side) for this fun class. In this class, students will learn the core principles of improv, such as saying "yes, and..." (accepting and building on others' ideas), making strong choices, and supporting fellow performers. The class often includes fun exercises and games designed to help participants get comfortable thinking on their feet, using their imagination, and reacting quickly to unexpected situations. By the end of the course, students will have developed greater confidence in their ability to be present, collaborate, and create without scripts.

Improv classes also tend to be a great way to meet new people and engage in a supportive, non-judgmental environment, where failure is viewed as an opportunity for growth and creativity.
